I was going to try and find a video to share that was not produced by REI and about the Force of Nature, but then I spotted a few badass Seattle climbing ladies and had to share. Some great thoughts about sexism and climbing, especially given the essays that have been circulating the internet in the past couple months.
Also: Cedar Wright, Alex Honnold and Maury Birdwell’s new North Face video Of Choss and Lions. Loved it, and love the tone that Cedar Wright produces in so many of his series). This video was awesome for so many reasons. However, I did start to watch it at work and felt slightly uncomfortable with it on the big monitor, with many close ups of shirtless men. Still though, great.
On a much sadder note, the passing of Ueli Steck marks a massive loss for the outdoor community. When I was first becoming interested in climbing, I watched the series Explorers: Adventures of the Century; episode 4 of season 1 featured Ueli Steck speed climbing the Eiger. It was my first experience with mountaineering, speed climbing and extreme dedication to a sport. In that moment, he became a personal hero and I am grateful to the doorway he gave me to the outdoors. This loss seems catastrophically large, and it has been some comfort to mourn with the internet. This video by Outside Magazine is short but sweet.
